Akash Madhwal was banned from bowling in local tennis ball tournaments, reveals his brother

The Mumbai Indians have unearthed a remarkable young talent in the form of seamer Akash Madhwal in the IPL 2023. With his consistent performances throughout the season, the 29-year-old has garnered praise from the cricketing fraternity. He etched his name in the record books by registering the best bowling figures by an uncapped bowler in IPL history, taking an impressive 5/5 in the Eliminator against the Lucknow Super Giants.

Thanks to Madhwal’s breathtaking spell, the Mumbai Indians triumphed over their opponents by a commanding 81-run margin, securing their place in the Qualifier 2 of the tournament. In the wake of his sensational performance, Akash’s brother, Ashish, lauded the captain of the Mumbai Indians, Rohit Sharma, for his trust and support of young players. Ashish remarked, “The thing with Rohit bhai is that he gives players chances. He trusts his players and backs them. A new player is always scared for his position in the team. And Rohit has taken away that scare and Akash is delivering now. Rohit Sharma takes 50 percent of his tensions. Just look at the bond that they share (points to TV),” as quoted by IndiaToday.

Reflecting on Akash’s early playing days, his brother revealed that he was initially banned from local tournaments due to the fear surrounding his bowling prowess. “Nobody let him play here. There was a lot of fear of his bowling. So, he was banned from the local tournaments. Darr ka mahoul tha (there was fear all around). Akash used to go outside of Roorkee and play.”

Akash made his IPL debut in Match 46 of the ongoing season against the Punjab Kings, where he had a tough outing, conceding 37 runs in his three-over spell. However, he claimed his first wicket of the tournament in his second game, dismissing CSK opener Devon Conway.

The Roorke-born seamer has delivered three memorable spells thus far in the tournament, including figures of 3/31 against the Gujarat Titans, 4/37 against the Sunrisers Hyderabad, and a record-breaking 5/5 against the Lucknow Super Giants.

In the seven matches played so far, Madhwal has taken 13 wickets at an outstanding average of 12.84 and an economy rate of 7.76. At present, the 29-year-old stands as the third-highest wicket-taker for the Mumbai Indians this season, trailing behind Jason Behrendorff (14 wickets) and Piyush Chawla (21 wickets).

Akash’s brilliant performances with the ball have come at a crucial time for the Mumbai Indians, who have faced challenges with a depleted bowling attack due to injuries to star bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah, Jofra Archer, and Jhye Richardson. The 29-year-old has assumed the responsibility in the absence of these big names and will be eagerly looking to lead his team to the finals with another splendid display in the upcoming Qualifier 2.

Akash Madhwal’s meteoric rise in IPL 2023 has injected new energy into the Mumbai Indians’ campaign. With his consistent performances and record-breaking bowling figures, he has established himself as a key asset for the team. As the Mumbai Indians strive for IPL glory, Madhwal’s exceptional contributions have been invaluable, especially in light of their depleted bowling resources.
