IPL 2023, RCB vs MI: Kohli, Du Plessis’ stunning knocks outclass Mumbai Indians

In the IPL 2023 match between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI), RCB defeated MI by eight wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.

RCB got off to a good start as Mohammad Siraj took the early wicket of Ishan Kishan in the third over, followed by Cameron Green’s wicket in the next over, after RCB skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to field first.

MI captain Rohit Sharma couldn’t capitalize on his luck as he was dismissed by Akash Deep. At the end of the Powerplay, MI was at 29/3, and RCB’s Siraj had bowled a brilliant first spell of 3-0-5-1. However, Tilak Varma’s sensational counter-attacking innings propelled his team to a total of 171/7. Follow your favourite IPL team with attractive betting odds from Empire777.

Varma hit nine fours and four sixes to score an unbeaten 84 off just 46 balls. Nehal Wadhera also contributed to the total with his two consecutive sixes off Karn Sharma to bring up the 50-run partnership with Varma.

Chasing 172, RCB openers Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli gave their team a solid start with a 148-run (off 89 balls) opening partnership. Du Plessis went after Behrendorff in the third over as he smashed a four through covers, thumped a six over deep mid-wicket, and lofted the next one straight down the ground to make it consecutive sixes. He took 16 runs off that over.

Kohli joined the party thereafter as he started attacking Jofra Archer. The former RCB captain guided one through backward point for a four and then charged down the track and hammered a slower one over long off for a six. After a quiet over, Du Plessis took the attack to Green as he hit a couple of fours and a six to make it a 17-run over.

Du Plessis then brought up his fifty from just 29 balls by smashing Shokeen for consecutive sixes. RCB reached 97/0 at the halfway stage. Kohli tonked a six off Chawla to bring up the 100-run stand and then brought up his fifty off 38 balls.

RCB was cruising towards the target until Du Plessis was caught at long on off Arshad’s slower one. Karthik was dismissed for a duck by Green in the next over, but Glenn Maxwell was in a hurry to finish it off, hitting consecutive sixes off the same Green over.

Kohli hit Arshad Khan for a six but he was dropped on the very next delivery by Shokeen. Mumbai finally got their breakthrough when Arshad dismissed Du Plessis (73 off 43) caught at Long off.

The former RCB skipper finished the match with a four and a six as RCB won the match with 22 balls to spare. RCB’s brilliant performance in both bowling and batting helped them win the match convincingly. The team’s confidence will be high after this win and they will look to continue their winning momentum in their upcoming matches. On the other hand, MI will need to regroup and work on their strategies to come back strong in the tournament. Get all updates from IPL 2023 only on Empire777 Sports.
