Under Julien Lopetegui’s guidance, Sevilla had developed into one of the La Liga teams to be reckoned with during the previous several years. Under the Spanish coach, they consistently placed in the Champions League and even won the Europa League in 2020.

Nevertheless, Sevilla was having trouble replicating its greatest run of performance from the beginning of this season following a significant clearout in the summer of 2022 that saw Jules Kounde and Diego Carlos leave for Barcelona and Aston Villa, respectively. Lopetegui was subsequently fired in the first half of the season, as Sevilla found themselves languishing in the relegation zone. Enhance your La Liga watching experience with W88.

The Spaniard was replaced by a familiar face in Jorge Sampaoli, who returned to the club six years after leaving to coach the Argentine national team. The veteran’s return has not really borne much fruit, as Sevilla still find themselves battling relegation, most recently suffering a 6-1 hammering at the Estadio Metropolitano against Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.

Such being the case, Sevilla’s Sporting Director Monchi has reportedly shown an interest in bringing in a young crop of players in order to reinforce the side. The top of his list of targets is supposedly Barcelona’s U-19 superstar Ilias Akhomach. Akhomach is also the captain of the Spanish junior side, and currently plays for Barca Atletic. The 18-year old’s contract expires in June, and the player currently has no plans of extending his stay at the Camp Nou, as per several reports. Sevilla are believed to be in talks to sign the youngster on a pre-agreement.

Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez’ decision to call up Estanis Pedrola and Angel Alarcon for the game against Valencia in the absence of striker Robert Lewandowski and Ousmane Dembele, who were injured, has been interpreted as a consequence of Akhomach’s decision to open talks with Sevilla. Interestingly, Premier League side Leeds United have also expressed their interest in signing the player, and are believed to have verbally agreed a four-year deal with the player, making Sevilla’s task a tad tougher.
