Newcastle United likely to target Barcelona winger in summer

Newcastle United had a massive heartbreak in the Carabao Cup final against Manchester United. Despite coming so close to registering their first trophy in over six decades, Newcastle were left flat-footed on the day by a comprehensive performance from the Mancunian club, who had goals coming from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford to seal the deal.

However, what this run did was establish further faith in manager Eddie Howe to do the unthinkable at Newcastle under the ownership of Saudi PIF. They have already spent a lot of money in crucial positions and are now considering a massive summer swoop for many players across positions to possibly pose a title challenge. Howe is keenly looking at Barcelona winger Raphinha, who did play in the Premier League for a couple of seasons for Leeds United. The 26-year-old is having a mixed-bag season with the Catalan giants, who are on course to lay hands on the La Liga but have been pretty subpar in European competitions.

Newcastle United have been very particular and smart with their transfer targets since their high-profile takeover concluded in October 2021. They have not splashed cash for players like Chelsea did in the last two windows and the well-scouted signings who joined the Magpies have played a big role in bringing back the ambition at St. James’ Park. Eddie Howe has built a team competing for a Champions League place and despite recent setbacks taking them out of the European spots, they are not going to let that slide through so easily. They’re breathing down the neck of Tottenham Hotspur in the top four battle, which also includes Liverpool in close distance.

If they can finish in the top four, it’ll be a lot more easier for the team to welcome star signings and players like Raphinha would be licking their fingers to head over to Tyneside. However, as things stand, Barca’s stance on the player remains unclear and nothing conclusive can be said about this.

Newcastle were strongly after Leicester City’s James Maddison in the summer, but Maddison decided to remain with the Foxes. They did sign Anthony Gordon in a big money signing from Everton and the youngster is yet to get going. They have massive ambitions, and have the financial backing, making them a force to reckon with for all the English clubs. Follow HappyLuke Sports for more updates on the Premier League.
