Michael Clarke blasts Australian batters for poor usage of sweep shot

Former Australian captain Michael Clarke was left fuming with the Australian batting line up during the second Test against India in Delhi. Australia, who were in a commanding position at 65/1 in the second innings, went on to get bowled out for just 113 runs with Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin cleaning up the batting line up with ease.

What really stood out during this phase of play was the number of times Australian batters went for a sweep shot for the sake of playing it and completely miscued it. It left multiple individuals fuming, including Australian commentators Matthew Hayden and Mark Waugh. It also resulted in ending the debate about the pitch not being of the highest quality. “Matt Hayden and Mark Waugh are both there in India as commentators. If I was in the Australian camp, I would want both men to be with the team at the nets every single day. If they want money give it to them. Even Hayden who used the sweep to perfection is saying on commentary that you can’t just sweep every ball or play the reverse sweep every ball,” Clarke said on a show.

The 2015 World Cup-winning captain was thoroughly impressed with India taking home both the Test matches so comfortably in the series and was full of praise for Rohit Sharma’s leadership. India completed both the Test matches inside three days and took a 2-0 lead to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy for the fourth consecutive time. India have had their share of issues as well, with the top order not getting among the runs as much as they should ideally be into. This resulted in the team suffering some early collapses and required a massive partnership from lower order to save themselves from a defeat especially in Delhi.

However, Clarke is of the opinion that the management must back players like KL Rahul, who according to him are very talented. “I think if the team is winning and believes he (KL Rahul) is an important player he should be given another opportunity. If you think he should be backed and clearly the captain and coach, think so, I have no problem in him being given another chance,” Clarke added.

The third Test between both these countries will begin in Indore on March 1. You can follow all updates on HappyLuke Sports.
