Premier League: Manchester United move back into top four with 1-0 win over Brentford

Manchester United secured a much-needed win in the Premier League after defeating Brentford 1-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday. The team dominated the first half and scored a deserved lead through Marcus Rashford’s thumping finish, assisted by Antony and Marcel Sabitzer. In the second half, David De Gea made a crucial save to deny Brentford a goal and secure the win for United.

Erik ten Hag’s team moved back into the top four of the league, but Newcastle United’s 5-1 win over West Ham United meant that they remained in third place.

Ten Hag had demanded a response from his team after their defeat to Newcastle, and they delivered a relentless performance from the start. The Reds created several chances in the first half, with Scott McTominay coming close with a beautifully hit strike that flew narrowly over the bar. Luke Shaw and Marcel Sabitzer combined well, but the latter’s effort was deflected behind for a corner. Antony picked up the loose ball and lofted it into Sabitzer, who cushioned his header towards Rashford to open the scoring.

United continued to dominate and came close to doubling their lead, but Rashford’s ball into the danger zone was gathered by David Raya.

Brentford came out strong in the second half, and De Gea’s intended pass was quickly closed down by Ivan Toney, who almost scored. However, the Reds played some slick football to progress up the field and create more chances. Sabitzer was influential in the middle of the park, but his resulting effort on goal was tame.

De Gea made a fantastic save after the hour mark to deny Kevin Schade a certain goal. The Reds defended with great poise to keep Brentford at bay, with Lisandro Martinez having an assured performance at the back. Fred had a chance to make the points safe but fired over the bar.

Brentford’s last effort came from Toney, who attempted an audacious chip from range, but it sailed over the goal. Rashford’s first-half goal proved to be the difference, securing the win for United.
