Ravi Ashwin surpasses Kapil Dev’s tally of 687 international wickets

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has now overtaken Kapil Dev as India’s third leading wicket-taker in international cricket. The world no. 1 bowler in Test cricket, Ashwin scalped three wickets in the first innings against Australia in Indore, which helped him get past Kapil Dev’s tally of 687 wickets (434 in Tests, 253 in ODIs).

The off-break bowler from Tamil Nadu is not a long distance away from Harbhajan Singh, who stand second in this list with 707 wickets for the country, while Anil Kumble comfortably sits at the top with 953 scalps. In a remarkable career that spanned over a decade, Ashwin has continued to scale greater heights with every passing year and is keen on touching Kumble’s all-time record before retiring. Many times in the past, the question arose whether or not Ashwin can get close to that tally. However, the difficult task for Ashwin is to maintain the longevity, which won’t be easy as he is already 36 and will turn 37 in September this year. India will not be playing as many Test matches this year due to the ODI World Cup coming up, and Ashwin as it stands, is not a part of the 50-over setup.

Although Ashwin achieved great success in the longest format, registering 466 wickets in 91 Tests, he has not translated similar dominance in other formats. However, he still has fantastic numbers in ODIs and T20Is, but they’re just not parallel to the standards he set in Test cricket as their most lethal wicket-taking bowler. Follow your favourite team and bet on them with attractive Fun88 odds.

In ODIs, Ashwin picked up 151 wickets in 113 matches and was also a part of the World Cup-winning squad in 2011, where he most notably featured in the quarter-final against Australia. He last featured in the ODI squad for India in January 2022 against South Africa and is unlikely to make a return in that format.

The case is quite similar in T20Is, but Ashwin has had a good run until recently. He was a part of both the T20 World Cups that took place over the last two years, but did not make as good an impression as fans would’ve liked. This means that Ashwin will have to do bulk of his duties in the longest format to get anywhere close to Kumble’s 953-wicket tally. Follow Fun88 Sports to get more updates from the world of sports.
